Why Enneagram Training for Therapists?
The Enneagram has become an increasingly popular tool for self-growth and personal development in recent years. I’ve had many therapists approach me over the years saying, “My client told me their Enneagram type and wants to use the Enneagram in therapy. This system looks dynamic and complex—how can I incorporate it?”
The Enneagram is complex and dynamic. I’ve been teaching the system and incorporating it into my own clinical work for over a decade, and I’m still learning new things all the time. With that experience, I’ve also learned how to teach the Enneagram in a way that is digestible, useful, and highly adaptable to the therapeutic tools you are already using.
Enneagram Training for Therapists Who Want to Grow in Self-Awareness and Resilience
One of the most meaningful outcomes of Enneagram training for therapists is learning how to apply it to yourself. “Know thyself, counselor” certainly didn’t stop when grad school ended.
Learning the Enneagram is a powerful way to continue your journey of self-awareness, self-care, and self-growth. Understanding the core motivations, core wounding, and patterns of the Enneagram types can help you reflect on what’s hindering your growth and contributing to stress. It can also help you identify what needs to be challenged so you can move more fully into health and recognize what truly supports your growth — as a therapist and a human.
Learning the Enneagram can also improve communication and collaboration within your team. My trainings are often filled with laughter and “aha” moments as therapists see themselves and their colleagues in the Enneagram type descriptions. This leads to dynamic group conversations, increased awareness, and new perspectives on what individuals need to thrive in a workplace setting. Often during the training itself, teams begin discussing changes they’d like to make to better support one another. It’s really meaningful to witness, and it makes me happy that the Enneagram can serve as a jumping-off point for these collaborative and useful conversations.
Impact and New Perspectives: What Therapists Say After Enneagram Training
“This was amazing! As you were talking about all of the types I could see my clients, my family members, my friends. This has given me so many ideas on how to work with my clients.”
— Licensed Therapist, Agency Setting
“I realized that I’ve been taking on too much because I’m not actually telling people no. I don’t want to make anyone mad, but I see now how avoiding conflict is making things worse.”
— Licensed Social Worker, Group Practice Owner
“I didn’t realize that others are intimidated by me. I don’t want them to feel like they can’t come to me with problems. I’m going to work on shifting that.”
— Licensed Therapist, Group Practice Owner
“I have so much more compassion for everyone. I always assume others are thinking the same way that I am, and I realize that’s not at all the case.”
— Licensed Therapist, Group Practice
Embodiment-Based Enneagram Training for Therapists
Something that makes my Enneagram training for therapists unique is my training in The Embodiment Tradition of the Enneagram. The Embodiment Tradition contains all of the same patterns and teachings of the traditional Enneagram, with the added layer of energetics.
Energetics are the somatic expressions of a type that go beyond just movement. For example, when an Enneagram Type 1 is actively suppressing anger—judging themselves constantly and holding a high sense of morality while trying to avoid making mistakes—this impacts their body and the expression of their personality in a unique way. We can help our clients recognize these somatic expressions and work with the expression itself to notice when it shifts.
Just as people of the same Enneagram type share core motivations, traits, and ways of approaching how they get their needs met, they also share patterns in energetics. During my trainings, I demonstrate the energetics of each type so you can gain a clearer understanding of what that looks like in the body.
